Hi,

I'm really torn on a super long zoom lens... I have the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS and it's a terrific lens - well sealed against the elements I most commonly shoot in, like motocross and 4x4 truck racing. It's terribly dusty, or, it's raining.

I'm looking for a little more reach to shoot in the same conditions. The 100-400mm Canon lens tops my list because of the quality I get from my other glass.

However - I've heard rumors that the push/pull zoom type is prone to "sucking dust" into the lens. My 17-85mm EF-S was terrible for sucking dust in, and it's the reason why I leave my 24-70 2.8 at home for these brutal events.

So; What are my options for a long zoom that can compare with the image quality of the 100-400mm Canon lens? (or better?!)

Many thanks!

-- Chris.

Have you thought of getting a prime lens? I don't know about Canon but Nikons offers fixed ranges like 100, 300 and 500.. – admin Jan 5 at 11:41
Primes are beyond my budget, really. – Chris Wilkinson Jan 5 at 18:06

If you require weather sealing, and can't afford the high-dollar primes, I think the 1.4x or 2x extender (both weather sealed) with your 70-200 would be your best bet for a little more reach. You'll also keep your AF with the 2x extender on the 2.8 IS, which is nice.

Otherwise, the 300 f/4 IS and 400 f/5.6 are less expensive than the 100-400 and will surely top it in image quality.

The 1.4x TC has come up on my radar as an option - the 2.0x TC seems to get some mixed reviews on the image quality. Thanks for the suggestion! – Chris Wilkinson Feb 25 at 15:26
